'No' to bike speed limiters

77% of those of you who voted in last week's online survey would not support the use of speed limiters for motorbikes.

The speed limiter suggestion was aired in a House of Commons Transport Committee report looking into why crash and casualty statistics are so high among bikers.

A number of those who registered a view questioned why this should be introduced for bikes, and not other vehicles.

Here's a flavour of the comments we received:

'Motorcyclists often need the ability to accelerate out of danger.'

'Why should motorcycles be treated differently to cars in this respect?'

'Fitting speed limiters is not the solution. Improving riding skills and a realistic test and educating drivers to think bike is!'

'The majority of collisions involving bikes on rural roads are due to inappropriate speed, not exceeding the speed limit.'

'They already have a limiter - the throttle.'

' How about a rev limiter as this would prevent the way some riders feel it necessary to accelerate like mad?'

'An outrageous infringement of civil liberties.'

' Speed in itself is not the issue; skill and road/weather conditions are major factors.

'Although it would probably save some lives, I think speed limiters need to be fitted to all vehicles simultaneously.'

'Hitting something at 70 mph still hurts.'
