ESC can cut accident risk

The advent of electronic stability control (ESC) may cut the risk of having an accident on icy or wet roads by up to 20%, according to a new report from the European Union (EU).

While anti-lock braking systems have been widely used since the mid-1980s, ESC is a relatively new computerised technology that applies different braking pressures to individual wheels in an attempt to bring a car under control.

The EU has launched the Choose ESC! campaign to promote the advantages of the technology. The launch of the campaign in Rome included a demonstration comparing the performance of cars utilising ESC and those that do not.

"The Commission sees Choose ESC! as the first step towards all new cars fitted with ESC by 2012," said Viviane Reding, European commissioner for information society issues.

The president of motoring organisation FIA, Max Mosley, added: "There is no doubt that ESC could contribute significantly to the EU's goal to halve the number of road traffic fatalities by 2010.”
