RoSPA's Driving for Work: Safer Journey Planner
RoSPA has produced a new journey planner to help bosses keep their drivers safe at the wheel - as figures show nearly 1,000 people a year are killed in work-related road accidents.

Driving is now recognised as the most dangerous thing that most people do as part of their job. About 20 are killed and 250 seriously injured every week in crashes involving someone on the road for work purposes.

Employers have a clear legal duty to manage the safety of their employees on the road. They should ensure that their organisation's road journeys are properly planned and safely completed. This applies to all at-work drivers whether they are behind the wheel of a company car, driving on a mileage allowance, riding a motorcycle or in charge of a lorry.

The journey planner covers issues such as driver fatigue, raising awareness of safety issues among staff, reducing distances, controlling hours spent on the road, reviewing shift arrangements, using alternative forms of transport or video-conferencing, safer routes and promoting safer driving.

Suggestions include setting in-house limits on maximum driving distances per day, per week, per month and per year.

The planner is free to road safety officers and employers and from RoSPA's website:www.rospa.com

Too Hot To Handle Survey

The Shiny Side Up Partnership has published this report which shows that sports bike riders are unaware of the real hazards they face on the road.

The Shiny Side Up Partnership was initiated in 2001 in response to a significant increase in fatal crashes involving the riders of sportsbikes in Nottinghamshire.

The partnership comprises road safety practitioners in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland, along with Nottinghamshire Police.

During the 2002/2003 racing season at Donington Park the Partnership carried out the Too Hot To Handle survey, which involved questioning 370 riders.

The report examines the profile of sports bike riders and their attitudes towards riding, their behaviour and their perception of the behaviour of other drivers, their knowledge of publicity and educational campaigns, and their response to these campaigns.

For further information or a copy of the report contact Sheila Ormerod, Sheila.Ormerod@btopenworld.com, 01623 631641 or visit www.thebikereview.com.
