Bikewise
Bikewise’ the CD-ROM from Bromley’s Road Safety Unit is a new resource to support child cycle training and encourage adult cycling. It is an interactive multi media with information on safe cycling, bike maintenance, being seen, cycle routes, bike safety and more. There are movie clips showing children cycling on the road completing left and right turns, making it easier for children to visualise how to deal with junctions safely. There is also plenty of information for adults to encourage cycling, either to work or as a form of exercise.

An unbranded, generic version has been produced, so it may be used to complement training within your own area. These CD Roms are available at £2.50 each plus a one off £50 printing cost for having your logo, details and full colour inserts.

If you would like to see a free copy please contact the Council’s Road Safety Unit on 020 8313 4498 or e-mail at road.safety@bromley.gov.uk.

Surrey County Council’s Golden Boot Challenge
The annual Golden Boot Challenge is designed to raise awareness of the issues surrounding school travel and to encourage children, parents and schools to choose sustainable alternatives to the car on school journeys.

First launched in 2002 with 56 schools taking part, the 2004 campaign has seen 146 schools and over 29,OOO pupils across Surrey participating, and is one of the largest school travel campaigns to be held across the country.

The campaign is to be presented to the DfT and the DfES as an example of good practise to be shared nationally with other local authorities. The campaign's evaluation report can be downloaded here.

Mum or Dad leaflet

The LARSOA Yorkshire & Humber Education Working group has produced a new leaflet in the 'Mum or Dad' series aimed at parents of children starting school. The group, which includes Safe Routes to School/School Travel Plan Officers, has designed the leaflet to reflect the all elements of healthier, safer and greener journeys to school.

The style of the leaflet is in keeping with the existing very successful 'Mum or Dad' leaflet, and it is intended to produce a third leaflet in the series aimed at KS2 pupils and parents.

The leaflets can be purchased at a cost of 6p each. However, the artwork can be provided on disc for a one-off fee of £15.00

Surviving on Jungle Street
The saying ‘it’s a jungle out there’ could easily refer to our roads, and to survive the jungle you need to know the law of the jungle.

Produced by Cornwall County Council Road Safety Unit, the Surviving on Jungle Street leaflet aims to inform parents and carers of the techniques to teach children road safety skills. The leaflet outlines the three key pedestrian skills and how to develop a child’s knowledge of road safety. It also helps parents and carers develop and discover safe strategies with their children of where and how to cross the road.

Jungle Street has been designed not only to support current child pedestrian training schemes but also as a stand alone resource for schools and parents and carers unable to take part in road safety programmes.

Costs for the leaflets (exclusive of p&p) are as follows:
1,000    £420.00
5,000    £555.00
10,000  £730.00

For further information, or to place an order, please contact Tracy Porter on 0300 1234 222 or email roadsafety@cornwall.gov.uk

TO GO & NO GO
The pack includes an interactive CD with 30 copies of Record of Achievement Books. It can be used on either a white board or through a computer link, and is supported with teacher resources, printable work sheets, and letters to parents/carers - explaining what the children are working on. Each child taking part will also be given a Record of Achievement Book, which they have to complete. These 'Record of Achievement Books' are taken home to be signed off by their parents/carers after the completion of each module, which will hopefully encourage parents and their children to talk about road safety. It is hoped that this can be used as a stepping stone and improve both the children's and parents understanding of the road environment.

The Manchester Road Safety Team see this educational resource as an easy to use resource supporting pedestrian training, and a valuable and worthwhile tool that can be used within the PSHE and Citizenship curriculum.

We want to make this resource available to any authority that wishes to benefit from it. The program is now available for sale and can also be customised to suit individual requirements.

We are marketing the resource through Electromedia who can supply more information and a demonstration. Please contact Electromedia on Tel No: 0161 491 0286 or email: Judith@electromedia.co.uk

The London Borough of Bromley Walking Bus Scheme
The Walking Bus is a scheme encouraging parents to walk their children to school along a set route. The children walk in a crocodile fashion with the 'driver' at the front and the 'conductor' at the rear, and the children are collected at 'bus stops' at specific times along the route, similar to a proper bus route.

The London Borough of Bromley have created a CD-Rom designed to help Road Safety Units and parents set up their own walking buses. This CD-ROM is a multimedia interactive experience. It contains over 200 pages of text with commentary, 500 photographs, with some 2 hours of video clips and links to useful web sites, to assist parents, children and their teachers.

The Walking Bus Initiative is a key component of the London Borough of Bromley's transport strategy aimed at reducing congestion and improving mobility and access throughout the Borough. Safety is the key to this Bus, with the route being checked by the Walking Bus Co-ordinator, a Road Safety Officer, a Road Traffic Engineer and the Police.

Every volunteer is required to have a Police check, a sufficient volunteer-to-child ratio is followed and each volunteer wears an identification badge. Parents must sign a consent form, giving emergency details and every participant on the Walking Bus is required to wear a fluorescent yellow waistcoat sporting Bromley's Walking Bus logo - a must for every fashion guru!

We are delighted that Bromley's initiative will reach such a wide audience and be used to help educate and encourage other schools and individuals to start new Walking Bus routes. Hopefully, you will be seeing more Walking Buses marching their way to schools near you very soon.

For copies of the CD-Rom contact Bromley's Road Safety Unit on 020 8313 4546 or e-mail road.safety@bromley.gov.uk
Each copy costs £2 plus p&p.
