Bromley Mathematics Road Safety Project
Taking road safety into schools can be difficult against a full timetable and road safety often seen as a low priority. Fitting it into the lesson plan as part of the national curriculum is a way of getting the vital information across to the children without them hardly noticing.

The London Borough of Bromley’s, ‘Road Safety Mathematics Project’ book has done just that.

Titled ‘data handling and statistics exercises’, there are twelve A4 pages full of graphs, pie charts and tables used to put together a project. The difference between this project and others is that all the data is based on road accidents, casualties, speed surveys and more, to create a road safety project. The data is based on local and national accident data.

Aimed at key stage four the booklet can be changed for each individual school and as the data is local the children are more interested and it creates more of an impression upon them.

For a free sample please contact Bromley’s Road Safety Unit on telephone 020 8313 4546, fax 020 8313 1948 or e-mail road.safety@bromley.gov.uk

Bromley Pre-Driver Traffic Education Lessons
This resource ‘Traffic Education Lessons’ is used to get to the young drivers before they become part of the road accident statistics.

Traffic Education lessons cover all aspects of driving, the main focus being on driver attitude and behaviour. To encourage pupil discussion, it uses examples of accidents, hazard recognition and car control. The booklet can be used in the classroom situation, for example as part of ‘Citizenship’ or to be referred to afterwards.

Bromley Motorbike Rider Education Book
While in many parts of the country motorcycling casualties appear to be most likely among full licence holders on fairly big bikes, in Bromley riders in the 15-19 years age range are most vulnerable.

According to Bromley's Road Safety Unit, many of these youngsters show a lack of experience and basic road knowledge - and wearing inappropriate clothing also contributes to injuries.

Over the last few years Bromley has developed a strategy to try to improve the situation and, as part of this strategy, has recently produced the Motorbike Rider Education Book.

The book covers a variety of topics including documents, examples of crashes, correct clothing, hazard perception, bike control and positioning, and further training.

It is primarily intended for youngsters who express an interest in getting a 'Ped' during a Year 11 presentation. However, the book can also be distributed through schools or colleges, moped dealers and trainers - or via parents.

Copies of the book are available to buy at £1.85 each.
