DfT publishes
new dual language road safety guides for Asian children
The THINK! campaign has produced two new dual language road safety
guides to help parents teach their children road safety and keep
them safe in their early years.
The Get Across Road Safety guides come in two age ranges
- one for parents or carers of children in the 0-6 years age range
and the other for parents of children in the 7-10 years age range.
The new guides are available in English and either Bengali, Urdu,
Punjabi, and Gujarati. Some other single language versions are also
available on request.
The guides cover everything from child restraints to cycling and
rollerblading and give advice and tips on how best to teach road
safety, and include fun exercises for children to do with their
parents.
The guides were produced as a result of research among parents,
including in-depth research with ethnic minority language groups
from the Indian subcontinent. The research showed they wanted:-
- Dual
language leaflets rather than straight translations.
- Age
specific road safety information.
- Information
on how to teach road safety, not just what to teach.
- Material
that they could use with their child, rather than separate materials
for parents and children.
The
guides are available FREE from the Road Safety Officer at your Local
Council or by calling 0870 1226 236 and quoting T/INF/803U (for
Urdu with English), T/INF/803P (for Punjabi with English), T/INF/803B
(for Bengali with English), and T/INF/803G (for Gujerati with English).
