East Sussex County Council has also carried out a pilot using three
SIDs to explore their effectiveness.
"We measured speeds before, during and after and they were
very successful in a number of ways," said Keith Sindon,
the councils principal road safety officer. "We found
SID to be effective in encouraging drivers to slow down and popular
with parish and town councils and local communities.
"SID was also popular with the local school children, parents
and staff and received good publicity on BBC and Meridian TV,"
Keith Sindon added. "SID is even popular with drivers and motorcyclists!"
The road safety team carried out studies at three different types
of location and in each instance SID reduced speeds both during
and after use.
"The pilot shows that SID is effective in encouraging drivers
and riders to slow down," Keith Sindon concludes. "As
a result we have put a bid in for SIDs and operators to work with
parish and town councils in the five East Sussex Districts."
