New road
safety resource developed for Makaton users
A new road safety resource, designed for users of Makaton, has been
launched by the London Accident Prevention Council.
Road Safety for Makaton Users has been created
in partnership with the Makaton Vocabulary Development Project to
provide basic guidance to road users, their parents, teachers and
carers who use Makaton as a means of communication.
Makaton is a unique language programme, using signs, symbols and
speech for teaching children and adults who are experiencing language
and communication difficulties.
The hardback spiral bound book is presented in sections. Each section
deals with a different procedure or method of crossing roads, in
a step-by-step manner, using photographs and Makaton symbols to
illustrate each step.
Clear illustrations and explanations of a variety of safe crossing
places make the resource easy to use, both as a road safety teaching
aid and as a source of vocabulary development.
Copies of the book can be ordered (£25 each plus postage and
packing) from the London Accident Prevention Council, PO Box 132,
Dartford, Kent, DA1 4JE. More details are also available on the
councils website, www.lapc.org.uk
