news in brief
A series
of Car Confidence theory courses is being run by the Gwent
Advanced Motorists Group in partnership with Gwent Consultancy Road
Safety Section and Heddlu Gwent Police. There are three separate courses
specifically designed for older drivers, women drivers and disabled
drivers. Each classroom-based course comprises four two-hour sessions
and is free of charge. The courses began on 12 June. Further information
is available from Penny Thorpe at Gwent Consultancy Road Safety Section,
by telephone on 01633 463376 or by email at thorpep@gwent-consultancy.com.
Peterborough
City Council RSOs gave away free bicycle bells, along with
copies of the Highway Code for Young Road Users, as part of a cycle
safety promotion during half term week in early June. Free crime prevention
advice and cycle and vehicle safety tips were also on offer from the
Police Vehicle Safety Unit and cycle owners also had the chance to
have their bicycles security coded.
The Scottish
Road Safety Campaign (SRSC) Annual Seminar 2002 will focus on
child road safety, driver behaviour and vulnerable road users. The
seminar will take place 30-31 October at the Peebles Hydro Hotel in
the Scottish Borders. The fee is £110 plus VAT for non-forum
members, inclusive of overnight accommodation. Further information
and an application form can be obtained from the SRSC at Heriot-Watt
Research Park North, Riccarton, Currie EH14 4AP or from Iain Richardson
at Iain.Richardson@scotland.gsi.gov.uk
Suffolk
County Council and Suffolk Police are offering free child car safety
seat checks at various Tesco stores around the county as part of the
Travelling Tots campaign to remind people of the importance
of having correctly fitted seats in their car. A survey by the county
council in 1998 revealed that up to 80 per cent of child car seats
might be either incorrectly fitted or unsuitable. The campaign was
launched on 1 June and runs into July.
In a
similar vein, Peterborough City Council RSOs encouraged parents to
get a safety check on child car seats when seat manufacturers
Britax were in the city on 12 June carrying out checks. "Often
parents do the right thing by purchasing a good car seat but with
so many different seats available it is not easy to know which seat
to purchase and how to install it in the car," said Beverley
Jones, the city councils RSO.
