poetry competition attracts 1000+ entries
A highly successful illustrated poetry competition organised by
the Police/Road Safety Group in Gwent attracted over 1000 entries.
Prizes were presented to winners in the junior and senior categories
at a ceremony at County Hall, Cwmbran held in late May.
The theme of the competition was Speed and entries were
required to convey a message about the road safety implications
of inappropriate speed.
"We were delighted to have so many entries for the competition,"
says Penny Thorpe, the Gwent Consultancys principal
RSO. "Schools were able to integrate this activity into regular
lessons or into homework when parents got involved as well.
Inappropriate speed is a major contributory factor in road traffic
crashes and this competition will have spread the message to many
thousands of children and adults."
The
Police/Road Safety Liaison Group is a partnership between Heddlu
Gwent Police and the Gwent Consultancys road safety section,
which co-ordinates road safety publicity and campaigns in the region.
This is the fourth year that this competition has been held - previous
themes have been seatbelts, safe journeys and safe cycling.
