THIS MONTH'S NEWS - UPDATED 1 July 2002

New speed sign asks drivers to raise a smile

The latest piece of road safety technology to be employed on the streets of Hull gives drivers a smile – or a frown - depending on whether they are within or over the speed limit.

The radar equipped speed detecting sign displays the speed of approaching vehicles and if the driver is below the limit rewards them with a smiley face. Conversely, if the driver is over the limit they are greeted by a frowning face.

Councillor Keith Toon, Hull City Council’s cabinet member for road safety says that the sign is a friendly reminder rather than a step towards prosecution. "It is important to get the message across that drivers must travel at safe speeds throughout the city," he explains. "Those who regularly put others at risk by driving too quickly can expect to be brought to book but we would much rather persuade than punish wherever we can. This project gives drivers a clear reminder of their speed and lets them know if they are over the limit."

The sign is being used on several routes where speed is a problem. Chris Rockett, one of the city’s school crossing patrollers, has been operating the sign between his crossing duties. "The effect so far has been fantastic," he says. "Nearly all drivers slow down if they get the frown."

A second sign will be made available to Hull schools to use as part of a maths and road safety project. Pupils will be able to use the sign to remind drivers of the limit and to gather speed data for maths work.

Further information about the sign can be obtained from Mark Jessop, Kingston upon Hull City Council road safety section on 01482 612103.
