Bromley scoops
prestigious cycling and walking award
The annual National Transport Awards has awarded its top prize for
cycling and walking to Bromley Council. The award, which was sponsored
by the DfT, recognises the innovative approach that the Council
has adopted in enhancing and promoting cycling and walking.
"This award compares us with councils from across the country,"
said Councillor George Taylor, executive councillor
for environment. "It demonstrates that we are leading the field
when it comes to new approaches in encouraging cycling and walking.
By making cycling and walking easier, we believe that it will encourage
people to make more use of their legs - instead of driving everywhere"
The approach to enhance and promote cycling and walking has included
improving cycle routes, developing safer routes to school, increasing
the number of 'Walking buses', and reducing car journeys to and
from school by introducing School Travel Plans.
"The award also recognised our work in producing a 'toolkit'
to evaluate and compare pedestrian facilities from different areas,"
said Gareth Davies, assistant director, transportation
and planning. "We pioneered this approach in partnership with
the Transport Research Laboratory and it has now been adopted by
Transport for London (TfL) for use across London"
The Council was also one of three boroughs short-listed for London
Transport Borough of the year.
