What Bugs
You?, campaign asks
RSOs and emergency services in the Mercia region came together on
11 June to launch What Bugs You?, a campaign to raise
awareness of the high number of cycling casualties that occur in
the summer months.
Statistics show that the majority of accidents involving cyclists
occur during the period April September, and because of this
the working group set up to develop the campaign decided to focus
on these months. The group also felt that the campaign should address
all road users and not just cyclists - as everyone has a responsibility
to behave with consideration for others.

It
was decided that the campaign would run for a three weeks period,
and refreshed each week. The month of June was selected because
this is when Bike Week and Child Safety Week take place, and it
is just before the traditional holiday period.
The campaign strap line What Bugs You?' recognises that at
some stage cyclists are going to bug each other and that there will
be clashes between cyclists and pedestrians, car drivers and HGV
drivers.
A campaign leaflet has been produced, along with a poster and other
promotional materials including bugs and balloons. The campaign
is not meant to be patronising - rather a light-hearted reminder
to all road users to be considerate towards others.
The Mercia Group comprises road safety officers from: Birmingham
City Council; Coventry City Council; Dudley Metropolitan B C; Herefordshire
Council; Sandwell Metropolitan B C; Shropshire County Council; Solihull
Metropolitan B C; Staffordshire County Council; Stoke-on-Trent City
