The Golden
Boot Challenge - fun filled Fridays for school children in Surrey
For five Fridays starting on 13 June, 31,500 pupils from 127 Surrey
schools are taking part in the 2003 Surrey County Council Golden
Boot Challenge, which involves leaving the car at home and travelling
to school under their own steam.
The Golden Boot Challenge is now countywide following the success
of its launch last year in east Surrey, when approximately 12,000
pupils participated. It was found that up to 50 per cent more children
arrived at school without the car on Golden Boot days compared to
a normal day.
The challenge is a Way 2 Go event and has been set up
as part of the Safe Routes to Schools programme. It is aimed at
primary school children who compete in an inter-class competition
designed to make them more aware of healthier and greener choices
in the way they travel to school. Pupils score points when they
use alternatives to the car, and the class with the most points
wins the coveted Golden Boot trophy.
"Children who travel to school by other ways than by using
the car benefit from the extra physical activity and also learn
the principals of road safety," said County Councillor Helyn
Clack. "Its a great opportunity for them to talk
to their parents and friends. The Golden Boot Challenge is a fun
way for them to influence the way that they travel to school and
win a trophy at the same time too!"
Abe Shallal, project co-ordinator added; "Were
delighted to see so many children taking part in this event and
appreciate the support of their parents. They can be as creative
as they like - last year parents even took their children to school
in a pony and trap! Before jumping into the car they should think
about how much their children would benefit from this event and
join in!"
