Alliance
established to tackle at work road safety
On 29 April representatives of some 40 organisations met and agreed
in principle to set up the Occupational Road Safety Alliance (ORSA).
The aim of the alliance, which involves key stakeholders in road safety
and occupational safety, is to help implement key recommendations
of the Governments independent Work Related Road Safety Task
Group (WRRSTG). In particular, the recommendation that employers should
be encouraged to manage risks faced (and created) by their employees
while at work on the road, as part of their overall management of
occupational health and safety.
In broad terms the meeting agreed that the aims of ORSA should be:
to facilitate networking between participants
to encourage joint working to raise awareness of the need for
action on work related road safety
to promote the exchange of information on new initiatives and
best practice
to establish a statement of common goals
to organise events
and to establish technical co-operation
A steering group was formed to carry the initiative forward, with
Rosemary Welch, traffic and safety manager for Essex
County Council, nominated as the LARSOA representative. The first
meeting of the steering group has been arranged for 14 June to look
at strategy, tactics, a work programme and operational issues.
Anyone wanting further information about ORSA should contact Roger
Bibbings, Occupational Safety Adviser, RoSPA by email at rbibbings@rospa.com
or telephone on 0121 248 2095 or should visit www.orsa.org.uk. |
