Motorcycle campaign launched in Gloucestershire

South Gloucestershire Council and Avon & Somerset Police have joined forces to launch a new campaign aimed at reducing the number of motorcycle accidents in the area.

The initiative attempts to persuade both motorcyclists and car drivers to take more care while on the road, and was launched at a local Safeway petrol station in the town of Yate on 29 April.

According to the campaign organisers, statistics show that many accidents happen either because car drivers pull out not expecting a motorcyclist to be there, or because motorcyclists simply don’t judge their speed or stopping distances accurately.

"Motorcycling can be a very cheap and environmentally friendly form of travel," said Peter Jackson, director of planning transportation and the strategic environment. "It is a very popular means of transport for young people. This campaign aims to help make South Gloucestershire a safer place for all motorcyclists and we are pleased to give it our full support."

The campaign comprises; a letter to the parents of all year 11 pupils in South Gloucestershire; cinema and bus interior advertising; distribution of leaflets to drivers at petrol filling stations; distribution of leaflets and posters to new/young scooter/moped riders via schools, colleges and youth clubs; secondary school visits by police motorcyclists to promote safer motorcycling; and a series of temporary road signs at motorcycle accident hotspots.
