Bikeathon raises profile of cycling and safety

On 4 May the BBC’s Blue Peter programme will be holding its third Bikeathon - an annual cycling event held across the country to raise money for charity.

This year events will be taking place in over 80 locations across the UK to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund. In 2002, over 21,000 children took part, raising over £0.5m for the charity.

As well as a fantastic fund-raising exercise, Bikeathon is a great opportunity to encourage children to get on their bikes - and to do so safely. The DfT’s THINK! campaign team has been working closely with Blue Peter to provide information on cycle safety and maintenance for children, to be included on the Bikeathon website and programme around the events.
