SID smiles on careful drivers in Luton

Luton’s road safety team is the latest to deploy a new digital speed sign as a friendly solution in the battle against the speeding motorist. The Speed Indicator Display (SID) rewards motorists who are keeping within the speed limit with a cheery smile. In February we reported that road safety teams in Suffolk and East Sussex had engaged SID’s services.

The detection equipment displays the speed of an approaching vehicle accompanied with either a smiling or scowling face, according to the speed recorded. Drivers travelling above the speed limit do not receive a fine or points on their licence - SID is simply designed to raise the drivers awareness of the speed they are travelling. The system is portable and can be set up virtually anywhere that speed is an issue.

"Education is just as important as enforcement," said Alan Collins, the council’s Road Safety Operations Manager. "Many motorists do not drive above the speed limit intentionally – they just don’t realise how fast they are going. By using SID on the roads around Luton the road safety team hopes to make Luton’s roads safer for everyone." .
