Theatre used
to link sustainability and safety
A play devised by Quantum Theatre for Science showing the environmental
benefits of walking was performed to schools in Wakefield in the
run up to Walk to School Week. The play promoted walking as a sustainable,
healthy option and showed that Walking Buses and School Crossing
Patrols can make it safe to walk to school.
"The play, What if it rains? examines the science
behind global warming and other environmental issues," explains
Wakefield District Councils Peter Hemming. "It
supports the promotion of travel on foot and raises awareness of
the deterioration of the environment caused by over reliance on
the car. It also looks at the health problems caused by pollution
and congestion and how to cross roads safely - all in a one hour
performance."

The
plot centres on Mason, a computer mad pupil walking to school on
his own for the first time, while at the same time playing a computer
game. The computer sets him challenges - relating to his safety
and the environment and he learns to solve these challenges
on the journey to school. It is presented in a light-hearted manner
with catchy tunes and bags of energy from the actors.
"The play is ideally suited to 7 - 11 year olds," Peter
says. "While younger children enjoyed it they missed a lot
of the science.
"Quantum has tweaked the show a little in the light of comments
we have made and they have corrected a couple of inaccuracies,"
he added. "I would certainly use the show again for schools
promoting travel plans and walking initiatives. We presented it
the week before Walk to School Week and this was the ideal time."
According to Peter, Quantum is happy for schools to buy individual
performances or to sell a whole week. He is happy to talk to anyone
interested in finding out more about What if it rains?
and can be contacted at PHemming@wakefield.gov.uk.
