Danger increases
as BST ends
In the early hours of Sunday morning British Summer Time ended -
and as a result risk increases, particularly for children and vulnerable
road users. As the winter evenings become darker the need for children
to be clearly seen by other road users becomes even more important.
With this in mind, CAPITA Gwent Consultancy's Road Safety Section
has made a selection of low-price, high visibility equipment available
to all primary schools in Gwent and is inviting parents to place
orders.
Six-year-old Eleanor Horton and her mum already wear
the hi-viz items on their walk to Eveswell School in
Newport (see pic). "They are really fab - I love my flashing
rabbit," Eleanor says. "I am sure it helps me to be more
safe when I am walking to school."
Penny Thorpe, principal road safety officer added; "Fluorescent
colours are best for daytime, with reflective items ideal for use
at night. The selection we are offering has examples from as little
as 30p for a sticker to a full 'Sam Browne' belt at £5.00.
The baseball cap at £4.00 is sure to be popular with youngsters
- and probably quite a few parents too!"
