Spike becomes media star in Cambridgeshire

RSOs from Cambridgeshire County Council supported Road Safety Week (22-26 September) by running Britain’s first ever ‘Spike Idol’ competition.

Spike the Road Safety Hedgehog, along with a panel of judges, invited pupils from across Cambridgeshire to give Will and Gareth a run for their money. The children were invited to sing along to the road safety classics, ‘King of the Road’, ‘Knowing the Road’ and ‘Stayin’ Alive’, from the popular children’s’ television adverts.

Spike’s tragic fall…….he was so close!

Ant and Dec, the judges and two lucky winners take time out of their busy schedule to pose for the press

"The children - and after some persuasion the teachers - really got in to the swing of things and I think we may have found one or two future singing stars," said RSO Lesley Hall. "It’s a fun way to get the road safety message across to the younger children."

Spike McPrickle, who first found fame in the DfT’s ‘Hedgehogs’ commercials, is rapidly becoming quite a media star in Cambridgeshire.

He ran in the Mascot Grand National on 28 September at Huntingdon Racecourse, finishing in a respectable fourth position – but for a fall at the last but one hurdle Spike would probably have won the race!

"Although many of the events were fun they aimed to get across a serious message," Lesley Hall added.
