..presenting road safety across the UK

‘Belt Up!’ schoolkids told

Results from a recent survey revealed that on average well over a third of children travelling to school in Poole were not belted up.

"The survey showed that 36 per cent were not wearing their seatbelts, which is very disappointing as this is an increase of two per cent over last year," says Leslie Hart, Poole’s road safety education officer.

Figures published by the DfT show that the number of children killed while travelling in cars went up from 49 to 75 - and this was the main reason for the overall increase in child road deaths between 2000 and 2001.

"The number of children whose lives are being put at risk every day on the journey to school is staggeringly high," continues Lesley. "As part of our on-going campaign we are joining BUSK this year in their bookmark scheme.

" Through the scheme, a brightly coloured eye-catching bookmark endorsed by Colin McRae will be sent to every pupil in the Borough."

When Poole’s schools return after the summer holidays they will be informed of the disappointing figures and will receive a supply of the bookmarks carrying road safety messages. "Hopefully for the sake of the children - and with the support of the road safety section, schools, parents and the local community - we will see an improvement," concludes Lesley.
