Bike Fest
encourages safer cycling
A new cycling event, Bike Fest, took place recently in Nelson,
Lancashire, with Lancashire's Road Safety Group on hand to give
road safety advice to cyclists.
The event featured a wide range of cycling activities including
displays by the professional MAD stunt mountain bike display team
and local cycle groups, guided family rides, a cycle try-out arena,
displays of historic and unusual cycles and cycle memorabilia.
Bike Fest encouraged people to cycle more by providing practical
help and stimulating activities. It is linked with other cycle initiatives
currently being implemented in Lancashire, including the Passport
to Safer Cycling scheme.

Passport
to Safer Cycling is offered to all children aged 10 years and above
through the County's schools. Schools and other organisations nominate
representatives who are trained by the road safety group to become
an approved trainer and deliver the scheme on the school's
behalf.
"Passport to Safer Cycling has helped thousands of young cyclists
to follow good practice and develop their safety awareness,"
said Neil Cunliffe, the road safety groups manager.
"Cycling is also beneficial to a child's health and fitness,
as well as developing young people's attitudes and behaviour towards
good travel habits that will last into adulthood."
