‘Don’t be vain – protect your brain’, cyclists told

‘Don’t Be Vain - Protect Your Brain’, is the powerful message that road safety officers from Milton Keynes Council gave to young cyclists on 26 August at the Ranger Roadshow, North Willen, Milton Keynes.

The council worked in partnership with the Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust (BHIT) and road safety officers were out and about rewarding children wearing cycle helmets at the event as part of the BHIT’s innovative ‘Helmet Watch’ scheme.

The first 50 children to turn up wearing a helmet were given a free goody pack and the chance to enter a competition to win a number of prizes including a bike. The RSOs also offered child cyclists the chance to take part in other road safety activities.

"Cyclists are some of our most vulnerable road users, with incidents occurring both on and off road," said David Frost, the Council’s road safety team leader. "Although wearing a cycle helmet will not prevent an accident it will certainly reduce the level of injury to the rider. Our simple message to cyclists this summer is, Don't be Vain - Protect Your Brain."
