Gwent teachers
benefit from Traffic Education training
Teachers from secondary schools across Gwent recently attended the
Road Safety Centre, Newport for an in-service training day.
The aim of the day was to develop new initiatives and to promote
Traffic Education courses in secondary schools.
The training day was designed and developed by John Jackson,
RSO for Newport, along with senior teaching staff from local comprehensive
schools.
The Traffic Education scheme in Gwent schools is managed by the
Road Safety Section of Capita Gwent Consultancy. Year 10 and 11
pupils are able to follow the course, which has a strong emphasis
on road safety, as part of the school timetable. The course culminates
with a CoEA examination in Traffic Education. Students study theory
in the classroom and also learn to ride and maintain a 50cc moped
on school premises. The Road Safety Centre in Newport is also available
for theory and practical lessons.

The
popularity of the course is increasing as schools attempt to broaden
the curriculum being offered to pupils. Traffic Education integrates
English, maths, IT, history and practical skills, while at the same
time developing safe and responsible road users.
