Council appoints travel awareness officer to work with sixth formers

Wakefield Council's Road Safety Section has appointed a travel awareness officer to give sixth form students advice and practical skills to help them sit their theory and practical driving tests.

Trish Hirst (second left in pic) is delivering the courses in partnership with The Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the police, two local driving instructors and the council’s health development officer. Her appointment is part of a programme to combat the number of accidents involving young drivers.

Each course lasts six weeks and comprises sessions covering driver attitudes and basic first aid, which is required for the theory test, as well as hands on practical sessions where students get the chance to have an off-the-road drive.

For further information on the course contact Trish Hirst on 01924 305898 or thirst@wakefield.gov.uk.
