Retest ALL drivers, RSOs say

Road safety professionals prefer the concept of compulsory retesting for ALL drivers, rather than only for older drivers.

In our 'older drivers' survey two weeks ago just 57% were in favour, with 43% against.

In contrast, when we asked about compulsory testing for ALL drivers 81% of respondents were in favour, with just 19% against.

Respondents were less certain about the frequency of retesting, with 59% favouring every 10 years and 41% preferring every five years.

More than one respondent suggested that insurance companies should take more responsibility for ensuring that poor eyesight and health do not impair driving ability.

And another suggested that 'many seem to have forgotten that a driving licence is not an automatic right but a responsibility that has to be earned'.

Another suggested that the frequency of retesting should vary according to casualty statistics, adding that 'it will never happen because it is too logical and governments generally are too spineless and worried about losing votes'. Another respondent echoed this pessimistic view of government's willingness to introduce legislation likely to prove unpopular.

Another respondent suggested that the standard test should be made harder, and compulsory advanced training should follow this.
