Fun day supports
World Health Day
Cornwall County Councils road safety unit and traffic
engineering section are joining forces to mark World Health Day
by staging a fun day at a supermarket in St Austell on 7 April.
Road safety is the theme for World Health Day 2004 and there will
be events around the globe to raise awareness about road traffic
safety. In 1998 road traffic accidents were the ninth leading cause
of death from disease or injury worldwide - by 2020 it is predicted
that RTAs will rise to third place.
"World Health Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness
of the issues surrounding road safety," said Paula Wellings,
county RSO.
"We want to encourage as many people as possible to attend
the fun day and hope they will leave with increased knowledge about
road safety - and how they can help to reduce road accidents."
The fun day will include child car seat checks, cycle helmet checks
and vehicle checks. The team will also introduce Cornwalls
new road safety mascot Spike who will meet children and offer
useful road safety tips and advice.
Representatives of the fire service, police, Red Cross, Devon and
Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership and Radio Cornwall will also
be in attendance at the event, which is being supported by the Asda
Superstore, St Austell.
