Council launches speed awareness scheme
Kirklees Metropolitan Council, in partnership with West
Yorkshire Police, launched a Speed Awareness Scheme on 5 April.
The pilot scheme aims to improve driver behaviour through the delivery
of both theory and practical training modules.
"There are plenty of things that can lead to drivers feeling
stressed or wound up when they are driving," councillor
Payne explained. "Our course will offer drivers an
opportunity to look at their approach to driving and give them the
chance to address any faults that might be creeping in."
Drivers are only referred to the scheme if they are detected speeding
by a police officer using hand held detection equipment. Referral
is made within a narrow band above the speed limit in 30mph and
40mph zones - and only if no other endorseable offence is detected.
"We are very grateful for the help we received from other providers
of speed awareness courses who hosted us on visits or provided information
and materials," said Ian Edwards, the Councils
senior driver training officer. "We hope to be able to return
these good turns very soon."
The scheme will be evaluated over a two year period, with results
fed into the national debate on speed and speed awareness schemes.
