South Gloucestershire
launches Resource Box for youngsters
A new initiative, the 'First Steps Road Safety Resource Box',
has been launched by South Gloucestershire Council to help
spread road safety messages to youngsters.
The Resource Box is aimed at children who attend pre school groups
and nurseries. The box contains jigsaw puzzles, story books, road
play mats, sponge painting and role play items, and is available
on loan to nursery and pre-school groups in the district.
Road safety officer Pam Williams has devoted a great
deal of time over the last few months to develop the box and write
lesson plans to accompany the resource. As a result early years
advisors have signed the project off as complying with the council's
Stepping Stones learning objectives.
"We believe in the 'hearts and minds' approach and therefore
if we can catch a child's interest early when they are receptive
to new learning experiences we hope that road safety will become
second nature and very much a life skill for them," Pam Williams
says.
