Campaign appealed to Scottish speeders

Scotland's speeding motorists were urged to take their feet off the accelerator to mark No Speeding Day on 1 April. This Foolsspeed offensive was run by all eight police forces and the Scottish Road Safety Campaign (SRSC).

During last year's campaign, 1,644 drivers were detected speeding in the 24-hour period - an average of one every minute.

Foolsspeed is attempting to change the way drivers think about speeding in urban areas and highlight the benefits of choosing to drive at speeds appropriate to conditions. It demonstrates the unnecessary strain drivers expose themselves to by ignoring the speed limits and highlights the everyday benefits of choosing not to speed - such as reduced stress levels and starting the day with a clear head.

"The encouraging news is that fatal and serious injury numbers have consistently fallen over the last few decades in Scotland," said Charles Michie , Lothian and Borders police assistant chief constable.

"This can be put down to several factors including improved car safety design, traffic calming measures, road safety cameras, traffic campaigns and better medical care. However, the success of any road safety campaign relies on the support of the public and motorists to drive in a safe, responsible, and courteous manner," he concluded.
