Cornwall school achieves 100 per cent Walk to School participation

For the first time in Cornwall a school in the county has achieved 100 per cent participation in Walk to School Week.

All 37 pupils at St Mawes CP School - some of whom live over 2km away - walked to school on one day during the week. To mark this achievement Billy the Boots, Cornwall's walking mascot, presented the school with a special award at the end of term assembly on 23 July.

The specially commissioned sculpture has been made from recycled materials and represents a walking boot, one of the images used to promote Walk to School Week. In addition, all the children received a Walk to School certificate to mark their commitment and achievement.

More than 100 schools across Cornwall requested Walk to School information packs from the Road Safety Unit and nearly 26,000 stickers were sent out with the packs.

"It is fantastic that St Mawes School had 100 per cent of children walking on one day," Rachel Smith, travel awareness officer said. "We hope that recognising this achievement will encourage the children to keep walking."
