Record number enter Royal Borough’s Walk to School competition

32 schools and nurseries in Kensington and Chelsea – the highest number so far – participated in the Royal Borough’s May 2004 Walk to School competition, which encouraged parents and children to leave the car at home and walk to school.

And Holland Park Pre-Prep School and Day Nursery is celebrating after walking away with the top prize in the competition.

All the schools and nurseries were encouraged to keep a record of their walking habits throughout the week and Holland Park achieved a 40 per cent increase in children walking to school.

"The achievement at Holland Park shows the real difference that choosing to walk can make," said
Frances Taylor, chairman of the Public Transport and Road Safety Advisory Group, who presented the cup to the school. "Walking can help prevent obesity and asthma and provides a multitude of health benefits."

Schools and nurseries in the Borough have another opportunity to compete for a cup during the next Walk to School campaign which will run 4-8 October.
