students produce eye-catching board games
Technology students from The Hermitage Secondary School in
Chester-le-Street, Durham County have developed their own Travel
to School board games.
The board games recently went on display at County Hall in Durham
as part of an exhibition organised by Study Support to promote out-of-hours
and after school club activities.
The challenge laid down to the students was to design board games
to promote safer routes to school, foster road safety practice,
highlight the health benefits associated with walking and cycling
and demonstrate the importance of a sustainable environment for
the future.
The assortment of eye-catching designs that the students created
using computer-generated graphics certainly attracted the attention
of invited guests and visitors to the exhibition. The exhibit was
also an opportunity for the students to showcase their involvement
with their own School Travel Plan specifically tailored to suit
the needs of their school.
The board games were produced to such a high standard that Ralph
Higgs, director of the National University of the First Age (UFA)
asked if the students intended to market them.
A new challenge has now been set for sixth form students at The
Hermitage. Working with a range of materials and textiles they are
now developing designs for a 'trendy' cycling kit to catch the eye
of teenagers and young people. It is hoped that a sponsor may be
found to support the production of the finished product.
