HA biker campaign wins national award

The Highways Agency (HA) has been awarded a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its campaign to help save motorcyclists' lives.

HA worked with partners to develop the HIOLI (Handle it or Lose It) website, which encourages bikers to share information about where they have 'lost it' on the road network.

Figures show that 364 motorcyclists and pillion passengers were killed or seriously injured on HA roads in 2004. The HA has calculated that motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to be killed or suffer serious injuries than people travelling in cars.

Presenting the Award to the HIOLI team, Prince Michael Awards' director Adrian Walsh said; "This unique interactive website is proving popular with bikers and is also providing the HA with a real time customer view on the condition of the roads, enabling it to tackle danger spots rapidly. This close cooperation with riders is vital to reduce casualties."

The site, developed and maintained by Black and White Strategic Solutions, provides riders with advice on road conditions, routes and training such as rider improvement courses.
