Seatbelt campaign gets results

A campaign targeting five Manchester primary schools has led to a 20 per cent increase in the number of parents and children wearing seatbelts.

Manchester City Council is supporting Greater Manchester Police's campaign to 'belt up in the back', and make sure that children are traveling safely.

For a six-week period, RSOs from Manchester City Council, police officers and parking attendants were on hand to give advice and, where necessary, the police enforced the seatbelt law.

The road safety team carried out before and after surveys at the five 'targeted' schools. The initial survey identified the school run as a peak time for children being put at risk by not wearing seatbelts. Often, many children traveled in the same car unprotected by seatbelts or appropriate booster seats.
