Cambridgeshire strikes 'Big Deal' with young drivers

Cambridgeshire County Council has launched a scheme that asks young drivers and parents or carers to sign an agreement encouraging both parties to drive more safely.

The council points to research in America showing that more frequent parental supervision and restricted teenage access to a car means there is less likelihood of young drivers speeding and more likelihood of them using seat belts. This approach is now being used in Cambridgeshire through a series of roadshows at which people are being asked to sign up to the 'Big Deal'.

Free DVDs, magazines and information packs are being handed out at the roadshows by the council's road safety team and the Cambridgeshire Advanced Driving Group.

RSO Matt Deacon said: "Even if people don't sign up it will hopefully encourage discussion between young drivers and their parents about their driving habits. For young drivers, a safe driving agreement is a good way to show that you are serious about driving responsibly. For parents, it helps to set sensible limitations on how and when a young driver uses a vehicle. This is not about distrusting young people, it's just about keeping them safe."
