Chief constable 'appalled' by drink/drug drive figures

The second week of the ACPOS Summer Safety Campaign for 2006 saw a 100% increase in speeders caught on Scottish roads, and a 22% increase in drink and drug drive offences.

During the week 4,492 speeding offences were detected throughout Scotland and more than 170 drink and drug drivers were caught.

Chief Constable John Vine, chair of the ACPOS road policing business area, said: "I am sure that I do not speak as a lone voice when I say I am appalled at the increase in those people who were detected for driving while under the influence of drink or drugs."

Among those caught were a 28-year-old male who was nearly three times over the limit on a mini moto on the A90, and a 52-year-old male drink driver who collided with a parked car in Grampian while nearly three times the drink drive limit. His 11-year-old daughter was a passenger in the car at the time.
