PTP pays dividends in Brighton
Brighton & Hove Council is claiming 'very significant rises' in walking and cycling levels in the city as a result of its Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) initiative.
"On some routes we have seen a 79% increase since the year 2003," says Dean Spears, principal transport planner.
PTP provides direct action to make the city cleaner, quicker and healthier. Over the summer local travel experts are visiting 10,000 households in the west of the city. They spend time talking through the different options for travel and explaining why certain options are better than others. Local people are left with a personal travel plan, which shows how they could walk, cycle or bus journeys they need to make - and how long it would take and how much it would cost.
Dean Spears adds: "The Brighton & Hove PTP project is unique in that we offer both engineering and promotional incentives together. On the ground, this means chatting to participants and providing the information they need to make informed decisions about their travel options.
"At the same time, providing facilities like cycle parking and footway improvements makes a real statement about the council's commitment to providing sustainable travel facilities."
