Cycle training
in the computer age
A new multimedia CD-ROM is bringing child cycling proficiency training
into the computer age.
The London Borough of Bromleys Road Safety Unit has created
Bikewise as a learning tool for both children and
adults.
"Our on-road training has reflected modern road conditions
for a long time now," said John Walton, Bromleys
head of road safety. "Our theory test ensures every child has
a thorough understanding of the rules of the road before starting
their on-road training. The CD-ROM takes the child through every
aspect of cycling, from turning at junctions to bike maintenance
and wearing the right gear."
Turning left and right is illustrated through a series of video
clips of children demonstrating the turns. There are interactive
quizzes on a number of subjects including bike maintenance, safety
and choosing a safe route to cycle to school.

Increasingly
adults are realising the health and environmental benefits of cycling
and showing an interest in getting back in the saddle. The CD shows
how to find cycle routes within the Borough of Bromley, how to store
bikes safely at railway stations or work, and how to combine cycling
with public transport.
There is also a section for parents showing how they can help their
child practice for cycling proficiency training. Teachers can also
play their part in encouraging cycling to school through a number
of downloadable games.
A generic version of the CD, with no references to Bromley, is currently
under production.
