Drink drive
roadshow tours colleges with Rock FM
The Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety toured Lancashire
colleges during the first week of December to dispel myths about
drink driving.
The Lancashire Partnership teamed up with popular teen radio station
Rock FM in order to communicate the real and horrific dangers of
drinking and driving. The tour was hosted by the Rock FM breakfast
show presenters, Dixie and Gemma Dee
and took place over lunchtime periods.
The roadshow featured interviews with police officers that frequently
have to attend drink drive crashes. They spoke frankly to students
about the devastating effects of drink drive road crashes and gave
breath test demonstrations.
The roadshow also included an exclusive interview with a young drink
drive victim, Kevin Fraser, who spoke of his drink
drive crash and the devastating effect it has had on his family,
his friends and his personal life.
Kevin, who is visibly disabled, warned others of the life changing
affect just one drink could have. He spoke from real experience
to students who think they are invincible, and explained that looking
back he can say with absolute certainty that it was not worth the
one drink that caused him to crash his car. Kevin is a living reminder
that this can happen to anyone.
"The consequences of drinking and driving have been presented
to students in a very frank and honest manner - both the police
officers and Kevin have spoken in a no holds barred fashion,"
Kate Gaynor, communications assistant for the Lancashire
Partnership said. "This is not simply a deliberate attempt
to shock. Rather, with the majority of drink drive crashes involving
young people aged between 17 and 24 years, it is the reality."
The Partnership has developed new materials to specifically target
young people and Bomba drinks supported the roadshow by giving away
free non-alcoholic energy drinks - an alternative for designated
drivers.
