‘Switch off before you drive off’, Suffolk drivers told

Two giant mobile phones are being used to deliver the safety message ‘Switch off before you drive off’ to motorists in Suffolk as new legislation comes into force on 1 December.

The larger-than-life phones are being used to remind drivers that the new law prohibits the use of a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving - but Suffolk County Council’s road safety team is advising that even using a hands-free kit can be potentially dangerous.

"Research clearly shows that using any type of phone while driving increases the risk of accident," says Mike Motteram, Suffolk’s county road safety officer. "The problem is not the type of phone but the distraction caused by the conversation and we strongly advise drivers to switch off before they drive off.

"Our campaign particularly targets businesses because studies show that 75 per cent of drivers who use a mobile phone also use a company car. We recommend a clear policy that advises staff not to make or receive a call while driving."

Breaking the new law means a £30 on-the-spot fine or a penalty of up to £1,000 if the matter goes to Court. Driving carelessly and dangerously with any type of phone can result in a large fine, disqualification, and up to two years imprisonment.

The County Council has sent information to 5000 businesses across Suffolk, as well as publicity materials to libraries, the health authority and Parish Councils.
