| DfT launches Transport Direct
The DfT officially launched Transport Direct, a travel information and journey planning service for Great Britain, during the course of last week.
Available online at www.transportdirect.info, Transport Direct delivers comprehensive travel information for both public and private transport, and is designed to help people make better informed decisions when planning journeys in Great Britain.
The new service links existing sources of travel information, thereby offering multi-modal door-to-door journey planning as well as more traditional planning for either car, air, coach or train. Transport Direct gives step-by-step instructions supported by detailed maps that can be viewed at a range of scales.
Transport Direct also contains 'live travel' information, including real-time information on services to and from Britain's 2500 railway stations. Travellers can check the likelihood of delays on road and rail routes and see whether choosing a different route, departure time or transport mode might suit them better.
Through links to rail and coach ticket retailers, public transport users can also buy tickets without having to re-enter journey details. Road users benefit from journey plans that take into account historical traffic levels that vary according to the day and time, for much of the trunk road network.
