Free night bus service trialled in Sussex

A free weekend night bus service for partygoers has been launched in Mid Sussex as part of a drive to reduce Christmas road accidents.

Mid Sussex Police, in partnership with the Fire and Rescue Service, West Sussex County Council, Mid Sussex District Council and local licensees, is operating the service between 11pm and 1am for four weekends during December.

Fire service district commander Richard Bond said: "The aim is to provide a safety net for people tempted to drink and drive. If the service is successful we will look to extend it to other towns in the area next year."

The drink-drive initiative also includes a crashed car displayed on a roundabout and a beer mat and poster campaign. Local brewers Harveys have distributed the beer mats and posters to their licensed premises in the area.
