MP calls for clampdown on cyclists

Ann Widdecombe , the Conservative MP for Maidstone and The Weald, has called for a change in the law to make cyclists obey the same road laws as car drivers.

Ms Widdecombe's call follows a recent attack by a cyclist on Poirot star David Suchet and his actress wife Sheila Ferris.

The couple were driving in London when the cyclist pulled out from a side road in front of Mr Suchet's car. He sounded his horn and had to swerve to avoid the rider. The cyclist caught up with their car at the next set of traffic lights and began shouting and kicked the car door.

Ms Widdecombe has become the public voice of the anti-cyclist movement, according to GMTV. Ms Widdecombe says that as the government is making it a priority to reduce the number of cyclists killed and injured, the answer is to make them obey the same laws as car drivers.

She went on to say that many cyclists are guilty of displaying no lights in the dark, driving through red traffic lights, cycling on pavements and pedestrian crossings, not signalling with their hands when turning, and weaving in and out of stationary cars.
