Shoes highlight road Irish road deaths
A partnership comprising local authorities, the fire & rescue service and Gardaí in Carlow has launched a campaign highlighting the number of deaths on Irish roads.
A line of shoes placed in the middle of a road in Carlow town centre, with signs at each end saying 374 dead, depicts the number of deaths on Irish roads in 2004 - the year that Ireland was the only EU country to record an increase in road deaths.
"This was such an unusual sight that I hope it will turn peoples' minds to slowing down, using seat belts and never drinking and driving," said John McDarby , Carlow's road safety promotion officer.
