Taking the soft - but expensive - option
RSOs in Yorkshire and Humberside are conducting a survey, via the LARSOA website, to see if drivers are being forced to pay over the odds for soft drinks in licenced premises.
In 1999 the Department for Trade and Industry publicised research into soft drink prices in pubs, which showed a wide range of prices for 'the soft option'. This new survey will show whether the position has changed in the intervening years.
Over the next few weeks, people in Yorkshire and Humberside are being urged to record the price of a pint of lager and a glass of cola in their local pub. All participants (from the region) will be entered into a prize draw with iPod minis up for grabs as prizes.
"We want to see if drivers are being charged over the odds for taking the soft option," said Mark Jessop , RSO in Kingston upon Hull. "Some pubs are already playing their part by offering free or reduced priced drinks for designated drivers and we would like to see that kind of positive marketing extended."
