SCP provides inspiration

Hull's road safety team is hoping the city's newest school crossing patrol will inspire others to take up the role.

Sonia Hartley is SCP at a new site on National Avenue - where she had a very serious accident at the age of five. Although she made a complete recovery, Sonia had extensive reconstructive surgery at the age of six and had to learn to walk again because of a broken femur.

Of the 98 SCP sites in Hull, 12 are currently vacant and in need of a patroller.

"It is quite rare to be creating a new school crossing patrol site," said Mark Jessop, RSO. "Over the last few years it has become increasingly difficult to recruit patrols and we desperately need people to apply."

Speaking about her appointment, Mrs Hartley said: "Having such a bad accident at an early age has made me very aware of the dangers children can face near a school site, and I am happy that I can make a difference to their safety."
