RSOs launch local drink drive initiatives

Here's a round up of some of the local drink drive campaigns that launched last week.

The Essex Casualty Reduction Board launched its campaign at Writtle College, near Chelmsford. The launch included a demonstration of how injured passengers are cut out of a crashed vehicle, and students participated in demonstrations of accurate drink unit measures and wore 'beer goggles' while operating radio-controlled cars, to simulate driving when over the limit.

As part of the campaign, Essex Casualty Reduction Board is calling for people to avoid drink driving, and to report drink drivers. The campaign is being promoted via posters, bus backs, banners, leaflets and radio advertising.

Hollyoaks television soap celebrity Simon Cole helped launch Peterborough's campaign on 4 December.

Posters of a male asleep in a police cell under the text Whose bed will you end up in after the Xmas party? are being circulated to businesses, pubs and clubs across Peterborough.

Adding his support for the campaign, Simon Cole said:  "It is shocking to see the rise in the number of young males being convicted of drink driving."

The whose bed poster is also being used by Buckinghamshire's road safety team. The county's campaign is also being supported by local taxi companies, who will be promoting the message, You drink, I'll drive on their vehicles.

Kent County Council is running a billboard and bus back campaign carrying the message You Drink, I Drive. The posters comprise a picture of a taxi to encourage people to get a taxi home, or use some form of public transport.

The County Council is also warning drivers to be wary of being over the limit the morning after a night out. Steve Horton, road safety operations manager, said: "Coffee, fresh air or a cold shower will not sober you up. Coffee will make you feel awake and drunk, fresh air will make you cold and drunk and a shower will just make you clean and drunk. But you're still drunk."

In Luton, the road safety team staged a crash scene in the town centre on 1 December. Injured 'victims', portrayed by actors, were stranded in a badly damaged vehicle with road safety professionals on hand to give out credit card size details of local taxis. A full-sized screen was also used to show dramatic images of car crashes to reinforce the dangers of drinking and driving.
