Motorists voice safety concerns in survey

Motorists in Britain want to see more traffic police on the roads, according to a new study.

High profile police patrol cars are the best way to make Britain's roads safer, according to 42% of people who responded to the Tesco Car Insurance survey. In other findings, 43% would be happy to see the driving age raised to 18 - and 22% went further, saying the age at which drivers can pass their test should be raised to 21.

"Our findings reveal a sizeable majority of motorists feel unprotected on the roads, favouring tougher penalties for those breaking the law, and trapped between the increasing cost of motoring and lack of a viable alternative for their regular journeys," said Allan Burns, head of Tesco Car Insurance.
